Modeling the effects of nutrient concentrations on ecosystem stability:

چکیده
The effects of nutrients on algal productivity are not transferred directly to production at higher trophic levels and can not be modelled as if they were. Rates of processes and time scales at different trophic levels require a modular approach to a comprehensive model of the Great Lakes. Predator growth is based ultimately on prey availability and life histories of predators. Factors that control availability of preferred prey (e.g. top-down vs. bottom up) are unresolved. Prey availability is ultimately controlled by C-flow from the base of the food web, but many factors besides nutrient loading influence C-flow to forage fish. Here we focus on factors at the base of the food web that influence Cand P-flow and the efficiency of energy transfer from phytoplankton to forage fish. Specifically, we consider a detailed model of the base of the food web that includes phytoplankton production, grazing interactions and processes in the microbial food web (MFW): bacterial production and bacterivory. The model is constructed from authentic field data and fit into an exact steady state model in a unique way. Phosphorus concentration is the major forcing in this model. The model is examined for ecosystem stability to loading perturbations. Examination of factors to which Cand P-flow is most sensitive indicates much more attention needs to be given to the significance of MFW, especially in offshore communities.

Comparison of Ecological Patches' Potentials and Functions in Rangeland Ecosystems (Case Study: Qahavand Rangelands, Hamedan Province, Iran)
Interrupting the processes which control ecosystem resources has dramatic impacts on the rangeland conditions. To protect ecosystems and landscape, it needs to understand the ecosystem processes which regulate the ecosystem resources. As main components of ecosystems, patches and inter-patches play important roles in energy and materials cascade. Ecologically, functional parameters such as stab...
متن کاملPhytoplankton Diversity Effects on Community Biomass and Stability along Nutrient Gradients in a Eutrophic Lake
The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning is a central issue in ecology, but how this relationship is affected by nutrient stress is still unknown. In this study, we analyzed the phytoplankton diversity effects on community biomass and stability along nutrient gradients in an artificial eutrophic lake. Four nutrient gradients, varying from slightly eutrophic to highly eutr...
متن کاملEffects of the Timing of Foliar Application and Concentrations of Growth Regulators on the Mineral Content of Pistachio Leaves
Pistachio is one of the economically important horticultural crops in Iran. The main pistachio-producing areas in Iran are located at the edge of the desert and are affected by soil and water salinity. Water and nutrient uptake by the root decreases under saline conditions. In this study, the effects of foliar growth regulators applied at different times on the nutrient uptake and leaf nutrient...
متن کاملTemporal Variations of Fire Effects on Dissolved Nutrient Concentrations and Runoff amount in Zrebar Lake Watershed
Fire causes destructive effects on soil, water and components of wetland ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fire on runoff amount and nutrient concentration of Zrebar Lake watershed between 2014 and 2017 and the return of burned areas to their natural conditions in the short, medium and long term. The results showed that in the fourth year after the fire, the am...
متن کاملEffects of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi on Growth and Nutrient Uptake of Apple Rootstocks in Calcareous Soil
The effects of three Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) species (Glomus versiforme, Claroideoglomus etunicatum and Rhizophagus intraradices) were studied on the growth parameters and nutrient uptake of three apple rootstocks (M.9, M.7 and MM.106). The soil medium contained a high level of calcium carbonate (38.65%). The results showed that AMF inoculation could increase almost all growth parame...
